Resubmit 2010 tax return

I use TaxCalc and was under the impression that you can only submit personal tax returns that are one year behind.

Therefore at the moment you could submit either 2011 or 2012 Tax Returns.

Things might have changed for the 2012 tax year and backwards - which would be great, but I was unaware of this change.

My understanding was that if the Tax Return is for 2010 or earlier then it had to be submitted by post.

Fingers crossed the other posters are right, anything to not send things to HMRC in the post and it saves money on postage too.

Ben

Is it possible to submit an amended 2010 tax return online? It won't allow me via the HMRC online software, just wondering if any third party providers will let me do this?

Cheers

There are certainly some John. I've done this on Drummohr and on TaxCalc a number of times. It could work out expensive though for a one-off.

I imagine all the other major SA suppliers will do this as well but personally, I'd consider writing to HMRC if it is just the one.

kind regards,
Tim

I am 99% sure that Andica will let you do it too.

Yes, if Andica does this, the software cost would be under £17 from memory.

I only started using TaxCalc in 2011 so assumed the re-submit facility had been there for some time, but I must be mistaken. Just quickly glancing at their website it looks like personal return software with self employment starts at £26 - not sure if this includes VAT.

If you need to correct a previous years return (without software) you need to write to HMRC

Extract from HMRC

Correcting mistakes after 12 months

If you want to tell HMRC about a mistake after 12 months, it's too late to amend your return. You have to write to HMRC and tell them about the mistake instead.

Ahh thanks Bill; I see what Ben was getting at now.

The HMRC blurb does not state 2010 amendments would be prevented from entering their system. Presumably you'd get a rejection message. Has anyone attempted this?

Hi Tim,

Just tried to send a test 2010 Personal Self Assessment Tax Return through TaxCalc and received a failure message - so it looks like the postal system is the only method for now.

You can however submit all back dated Corporation Tax Returns - so I am guessing that at some point in the future we may be able to do the same for personal tax returns too. Here's hoping!

Right Ben, thanks for checking that out.

I chose a bad time to change tax software as no sooner had I done so then all the HMRC errors came to light going back four or more years. Andica was a great 1-off solution to filing a 2008 Return recently but that was just late submission not re-submission. Not sure that I'd like to use it all the time though, unless someone can tell me later versions are more user friendly.

Regards,
Tim
