How does Twitter work?

Am I missing a trick here? as I am not sure how this whole set up works...? This is bad right... as I should know this in this digital age... or that's what I keep being told

Absolutely no idea.

Someone mentioned that it was something like 140 characters or less at which point I thought what the hells the point in that then!

I wouldn't even call that a good sentence let alone a whole message.

Like you though people keep telling me that I need to be on it.... Not going to happen (I'm not on Facebook either and they keep telling me that I also need to be on that).

I'm on Twitter, but I don't really "use" it as the "experts" recommend.
This is my blog on it: http://www.happyaccountant.com/2011/09/how-i-dont-use-twitter/

I've gained one client from it (but I would say that that was largely down to luck) biggrinbiggrin

Hahaha 140 Characters, wow the frustration that could bring about, Shaun ......................

No one needs to be on anything, use what is comfortable with you. I actually ahve a couple of twitter. One is my personal one where I talk to people about football and social stuff. I then have my business one in which I talk about the practice, link to blogs and look out for relevant helpful content. There is sometimes a crossover but not that often.

I am often told that is wrong by the social media gurus.

One of the key things however you do it is following the right people that are of interest. My personal one I follow, footballers, other sportsmen, celebs, sports writers, friends, people who talk about sport etc. The business one I follow other accountants, businesses, professional bodies (ACCA, ICAEW) etc.

It is amazing how much interaction you can have using 140 characters.

I use twitter as a link between all other networks like linked in - once it links to my twitter account the message is set to be shown on my website.

well, if you are following certain people / companies which could be prospective clients - am I correct in thinking others can see this...? therefore is there not a danger of them doing the same and effectivly 'stealing the client'?
