ICB LEVEL 3 OR ACCA
Permalink Closed

Hi there

Now that i've completed my ICB level 2 would you recommend i do level 3 or can i skip that and go straight on to ACCA.  I don't wan't to bite more than i can chew, if i jump straight to the ACCA will I miss on some vital learning from ICB level 3.

Shaun-- I know you mentioned to do it hand in hand with some of the F-papers but i can only study one at a timeaww

Hi Ghislane,

unfortunately don't think that ICB will give you any ACCA exemptions so it would be starting again from scratch.

Also if you go down the ACCA route as soon as you sign up you are restricted by ACCA regulation 8 (which we've covered on the site a few times) as to the services that you would be able to offer on a self employed babsis... However.... Nothing can restrict you from the srvices that you supply to your own business and ACCA student membership doesn't stop you from bookkeepeing to trial balance, VAT and Payroll work so to that extent dual memberships are fine. It's just when you get a little more advanced that the memberships get in your way rather than help.

Everything from ICB studies is incorporated in ACCA studies but the questions in exams are phrased totally differently. (I know this as I did ICB levels I and II using only ACCA study materials and got 99% and 98% respectively).

The ACCA exams are a lot more difficult than the ICB ones but to compensate 50% is a pass (and when you see that on some papers as few as 28% of people hit 50% you begin to realise that this isn't ever going to be a walk in the park).

You should probably think of yourself now as being at a crossroads. Down one path you have ICB down the other is ACCA. What you need to ask yourself is are you only taking the ICB path on the grounds that it will join up somewhere later down the road with the ACCA one in which case why do you not just go down the ACCA one now?

Even though ICB will not get you any exemptions it will have given you the foundations on which to start your higher level studies.

Also worth mentioning is that now you are AICB you can already be a self employed member of the ICB without taking any more of their exams so concentrating on ACCA from here forwards would to me seem to make sense.

Completely down to you as to what feels right for your circumstances as what I would do might be totally wrong for you.

If you want to chat some more about this just repost as I know that this is a real life branch decision that your making.

kindest regards,

Shaun.

Thank you very much Shaun,

My aim is to eventually go down the ACCA route, i didn't know if i would find it to difficult without having done ICB Level 3, but if i'm going to duplicate the work i shall go straight to ACCA. I have phoned ACCA to see where i stand about being self employed and studying through them, as you mentioned i can do everything up to Trial balance also SA- to me that seems ok as a majority of people i have spoken to have a book-keeper as well as an accountant.

I have set my self up with HMRC for self employment just waiting to get my practice license as soon as i have that ill get my insurance set up and i'll be ready to go..hope i havent missed anything out

No probs Ghislane,

Think that you're making the right move going ACCA now rather than postponing it if that was where you were heading anyway.

Sounds as though you're about ready to lauch. You must be seriously excited (and sure a bit nervous) at the moment.

Just a quick confirmation from your note. Did ACCA definetly say that you were allowed to do Self Assessment?

kind regards,

Shaun.

It might be best but fingers crossed they're actually ok with self assessment (can't see why they wouldn't be).

Anyway, it's Friday night so it's games night. My children will be logging in from all over the country any minutes to play Bad Company 2 so I'll love you and leave you while I go and get the crisps, dip and drinks ready.

Talk later,

Shaun.
