If you are a higher rate taxpayer, you can save tax and benefit the charity if you complete a declaration under Gift Aid. If you have paid little or no tax, then completing the Gift Aid section on the tax return can bring about a tax bill.
Such donations should also be declared on a tax credit claim - your income is reduced by the grossed up amount donated, thus increasing the award.
