I have been recommended Hostgator as I am looking to do my own new website and I want to use WordPress. I have just registered my domain with Hostgator today. Apparently they are the best on the market at the moment for using WordPress.
I am at the moment using One.Com and they have been helpful and had no problems with them.
I use Namesco and I have found them to be really professional.

Ive used 123 Reg and 1&1 and a couple of others for domain names. I've also used 1&1 and Host Gator for hosting.
To be honest, if all you want is a modest website and a domain name there is very little critical differences between all the main companies. its more personal preference - they all have good and bad features.
When I used Host gator they had a sort of one click install for Wordpress which I thought was useful. On the other hand I don't think they had telephone technical support - only a support forum populated by Hostgator customers, for the most part (which was fine, but it takes a bit of time for people to reply sometimes).
By comparison, 1&1 had a 24 hr tech support line which was useful.
Then again, you are only likely to need support very occasionally.
The only other thing I would say is that - but you do need to check it applies in all cases - you can buy your hosting and domain names from different companies. Some people find it quite useful to separate them just in case they want to change hosting companies at some point.

I have been using XnYnZ.com for domain registry for many years and love them. Excellent service and great prices, with many advanced options, but easy to use.
