Hello,

Does anyone out there have any experience with actors and Schedule D treatment with regards to tax? If so how does one go about utilising Schedule D? Register as Self Employed? Fill out some other form or.....

Have scoured t'internet, held on for an advisor at HMRC foreverrrrrrrrrr, any help would be greatly appreciated

Kind regards

At least you were given the option to hold on. !! (see my post re hmrc). Years ago when I worked for Baker Tilly there was a whole department to deal with actors etc. so I assume it's not as straight forward as you'd hope

BC. If they are genuinely self employed then you'd register them in the usual way.

I have heard of the Revenue going after actors to reclassify them as employees or deny certain claims but you will know more than the Revenue about whether the claims are justified or not. I have a comedian/singer who always puts his TV License saying he gets his jokes from the telly. Needless to say, it always gets added back. You'd just fill in the Self Employment pages of the Self Assessment Return.

Hope that helps but please don't hesitate to ask if I have got the wrong end of the stick.

looking at some of the paperwork that crosses our desks Tim I think that we've all got a few comedians on our books!

I have a sound engineer employed through his own Ltd), who has put through a 50" LCD TV, as research equipment. In this instance I put it in a supense account for the accountant to make the decision.

There are specialist accountants who deal with people working in the media industry, and in the past, things like that have gone through, so was a bit reluctant to dismiss it. In any other circumstance I would have been rolling on the floor laughing
