Alternatives to Team Viewer
Permalink Closed

I have used Team Viewer a few times in the past few months to access clients data if I am unable to meet at their premise.

What I am worried about is that I have been using the non-business version as it's free and wondered if there was another free verison (another software) for business as I don't need it very often any paying for the full business version would not be cost effective.

Any alternative, preferably free and for business use ideas would be great.

Ben

Logmein is a free program, however you will need it install it on the clients PC to access it.

Logmein pro, enables you to print remotely, transfer files and copy and paste between computers. This is approx £45 a year

Join.me is another program that your client could use and you log into to see and control their screen.

Hope that Helps

Thanks

As an alternative to teamviewer, you may try using GoSupportNow remote support tool.

I was bounced out of LogMeIn earlier this year when they introduced charging for all - understand there is no free option anymore, unless they have bowed to pressure.

All of these services* will be using either VNC or RDP, all niced up in a friendly website. IIRC, RDP is of Microsoft's own heritage, and performs a largely similar task to VNC - so these websites will probably be using be VNC-based software).

So an alternative might be just to look for suitable VNC software - a server to run on the remote machine, and a client to run on the local one. A quick search finds this one, for example: www.tightvnc.com/

The only slight problem is that I suspect it'll probably be a little more fiddly to set up - especially getting the person at the other end of the phone to set it up correctly so you can view their desktop.

* I thought Google Hangouts was a messaging system - so either Ian's misunderstood this thread, or I've misunderstood Hangouts. (The latter is definitely possible, because I don't use very many of the services provided by Google - and those I do, it's reluctantly!)

Hi Vince,

I was completely unaware of Google Hangouts until a client asked me to join him in a session one day. He shared his screen with me as we discussed a particular development I was assisting with. It seemed very similar to join.me so far as the limited functionality we used on that occasion was concerned. I offered it with a question mark because I'm not that familiar with the features. It might be suitable for some in some circumstances.

Regards,

P.S. I just checked and it does do Remote Desktop Control. This gives you the option to take control of someone's computer (with their permission, of course) during a video call.

No longer free, although it does have a free trial.

Try xxx xxxx, free for both personal use and commercial use, it is apparently similar to Teamviewer in style.

Sorry, just pulled it, I should have checked before posting the link. McAfee gave me a red warning not to go there.
