Am yow talkin bout us ar kid?

N yow car even say Toi properloi

Actually, that's yim yam (Dudley) not brum (which is a really nice sing song accent).

Jasper Carrot used to do a sketch about the difference between those who can from Dudley and those who came from Birmingham.

Dudley : "Wher'm Yow go'in?"

Birmingham "Can oi cum too?"

Right, now off to have my crisp sandwiches. (local delicacy).

You Northerners don't know what your missing. biggrin

I keep popping in, in the hope of finding a "Daves story time" post lol.

I find the Midlands accents to be non threatening, laid back accents, in fact my sister-in-law has a slight fetish, that being that her last 2 fellas have been from that part of the country and i could have easily drifted off to sleep had either of them told me a bedtime story. Anyway enough about my fetish lol.

Hi Tim,

nope 'duck' is definitely Derbyshire.

totally foreign language to us.

In a sentence :

Derbyshire "Ay up me Duck"

Brum "Am Yow oroight ar kid?"

to my ears Brumi has a much softer and more attractive dialect

I'll grant you the Potteries are a world on their own but 'duck' is ubiquitous. I'm lucky though; if I was a native, I'd be a fellow 'Potherb' for goodness sakes! lol

Accents from Stoke (potteries for anyone getting confussed) are not like the Brum at all. A lot sharper and as you indicate, there are corruptions from Derbyshire, Cheshire and Nottinghamshire in there.

There are several very distinct accents in the area including some almost within spitting distance of each other. Brummies / west mids / South Staffs don't use the word duck though unless it's referring to the avian variety.

You may however get Bab, chuck, bud, mate, ar kid, etc. in replacement.

I can say without any doubt the Phrase "Alright Duck" is not a Brummie saying, Shamus was correct with Bab, brummies say Bab all the time and I use the term a lot when I am out but never on the telephone, on a personal note I think the Birmingham accent is the worst in the country especially when on the phone, regional accents are mad scouse for me is the worst for telephone followed by brummies, faves are Irish and Geordie. Auf Wiedersien Pet did brummies no favours when they put a Londoner in to play the part of Barry. He made the whole nation think that Brummies are thick, got to go now as I am getting tired of listening to myself lol

Was just reponding to Midlands rather than implying 'duck' was Brummie. No offense intended of course as I still thought Timothy Spall was from Wolver-ampton - Oh no, that will be interpreted as offensive lol
