Where can I get information on a simple system for a school that is just beginning? I am interested in a sample chart of accounts and simple procedures. The school has begun with nursery level and now has 72 pupils.

Hello Dorothy,

I think that you are out first member from Kenya. Shame I'm not wealthy enough to fly out and set your system up.

For day to day running of any small business such as a school there is little to beat good old Excel.

For the actual accounts and reporting try the free download of VT Accounts with which you will also get a 60 day trial of VT Transaction+.

You may take to it, you may not.

If you have a bookkeeping or accounts background you should find it quite easy to use and very adaptable to a wide range of needs including the financial reporting of a school.

At the end of the trial period you will still be able to see your data using VT Cashbook or drop the data into Excel.

Favouring VT is personal choice. Others will suggest cloud offerings (Xero, Kashflow, Sage One, etc.) and some will advise Sage (instant or 50) or Quickbooks.

All are viable alternatives and where possible you should try several evaluation trials in order to find which one feels best for you... It's worth noting that what is right on paper may not gel with you and something that doesn't tick all boxes may end up being perfect.

There is certainly no shortage of software options out there so you will have a fun filled few weeks of evaluation ahead of you.

Please post the option that you opt for and your reasoning behind your choice as such will prove useful to others in making their decisions over what software to purchase.

kind regards,

Shaun.

Thanks for helpful information on software. I agree that Excel is probably our best option for now. Does anyone have a sample chart of accounts or income and expenditure report?
