Payroll qualifications
Permalink Closed

Eveving all,

My other half has been told today that she will be made redundant and she has suprised me by saying she likes the idea of starting a payroll bureau as she is involved in some HR aspects in her current role.

This would fit in nicely with my current business and it is something that I could push more with the extra resource.

Is there a specific qualificaiton that anybody could recommend that she should look into completing.

I know a bit about AAT and some of the chartered bodies but these are not particluarly payroll focussed.

Just took a look on the BACS site and it cost around £4,000 to get authorised as a bureau, although i'm not sure this is a neccessity.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben

Hi Ben,

she may end up as the busiest person on this site as I'm sure that there will be loads of payroll work to pick up when everyone else washes their hands of payroll due to RTI.

Is this old discussion any good to you?

Might also be worth checking out the IPP website (Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals) as that was the course that Lisa went for with Holmes training.

Shaun.

The ICB do a manual and computerised bookkeeping qualification, that might be worth looking at.

Hi,

The AAT no longer offer a payroll qualification, so the three remaining qualifications left are the IPP,ICB and IAB.  The IAB qualification is split over 3 levels, 1, 2, 3, with seperate exams for both manual and computerised.  The ICB qualification is just a level 3 qualification which covers both manual and computerised in one exam.  The IPP is the one i dont know a great deal about, but it does look very good from what i have seen and it is atleast as good and indepth (if not more so) than the ICB and IAB.  The ICB and IAB would be a good introdutcion to the IPP.

The ICB exams are sat at home and you get a week or two to take them and are as such, an open book exam, which is more like being in practice.  The IAB exams you have to sit at an exam centre, at set times of the year.  Thus they are not as flexible but you get the advantage of an exam which is OFQUAL accredited which has been sat in exam conditions.

The IAB ones due to their more in depth nature will give you a better grounding as they can cover manual payroll in more depth but the ICB payroll is a quicker way to be a licenced payroll technician.

Kind regards

Nick

Thanks for your suggestions everyone,

Had a look at all the options provided and i'm not sure which option is the best to be honest.

I think that as you get the letters CIPP 'Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals' this option is the favoured route.

I'll let you all know which course she decides on.

Ben
