Understanding the Bank Reconcile Figures... Help please.
Permalink Closed

Hi all,

I am still trying to complete my bank reconcile for the 1st time, but hit a wall and need guidance please :)

On the reconcile screen I have:

last reconciled balance  -£28469.65

Book balance               Matched                Statement          Difference

-£28756.54                  -£21980.21          -£20494.70         -£1030.51

On the last reconciled printout for the previous month, the matched balance was -£28683.17

That is a difference of £213.52 between the last reconciled balance on paper and that on sage.

What do I need to do as I have no idea and pulling my hair out, lol.

Thank you in advance  :)

Hi blackviper,
may I ask you a question first.
You state you are reconcilling for the first time, yet you say there is a prinout of the previous reconcile. have you taken over from someone else?
In general if there is a discrepency in the last reconciled balance it usually means that a reconcilled transaction has been changed or deleted. So for starters look carefully at the last report and see if there are any transactions that are for £215.32. If there are the trace them in sage to see whats happened.

Hi, yes I have taken over from someone else, but they had previously left in May, where I only started at the beginning of Aug.

I'm straight out of college (mature student), 1st year of AAT level 2 after deciding on a career change.

I have found a deleted payment of £141.62 and re-inputted it, but this still leaves me with a difference of £71.90.

I have printed out all the reconcilled entries from the corrections window and cross referenced them with the April reconcilliation report but I can not see any differences???

My new boss is patient with me as this is my first job in my new career, but not sure how long he is going to put up with me not sorting this no

Does the last reconciled balance on screen match the opening balance on the bank stat you're starting with?

Hi there,

I agree with Eagle and Amanda, it is definitely a problem solving exercise. I am of the old school that prints off the nominal activity report from the bank account for the period and ticks off every single entry against the bank statement and does a manual bank rec on Excel, then does the bank rec in Sage. It may take a bit longer but it is thorough.

Edit:  As Dallas is back tonight (Channel 5 9pm) I thought I'd change my avatar .....anyone guess who I am?

My next step would be to go back until you find a bank reconcilation that has been completed accurately and start reviewing them from there. Before you reinput deleted payments you need to be certain that they should be reinputted. It's a problem solving exercise I'm afraid! Good luck.

you might want to look for 2 lots of £35.95, that equals £71.90. It may not just be one transaction of £71.90.

Just a thought, but it is going to be a problem solving excercise. I'm sure you will find it.
