No icons or functions showing after Text Colour
Permalink Closed

Hi, I'm using a decrepit PC while I get my new one sorted out.   Previously, the forum was fully functional but for the past few weeks has not been showing avatars and the above listed posting functions.

I updated Firefox to v15 last week but this made no difference.   The OS is Windows 7.

Any ideas why these are not showing.

thanks,

Tim

Hi Tim,

Is Javascript enabled?

Tools / Options / Content / Javascript enabled tickbox

also worth checking that you have the latest Java plugin? (I'm on 10.7.2)

hope that fixes it,

If not I'm sure that Vince will be along imminently with the right solution,

kind regards,

Shaun.

lol Neil... No, just too much time wasted in relation to another post meaning that we don't get to the right one's as quickly as we should.

Sometimes a size 12 boot comes in handy Shaun, this could also apply to Tim's current rig lol.

A quick look at the markup suggests to me that the avatars don't appear to need Javascript enabled - and testing that theory by blocking Javascript supports it; the avatars still display here. (Though interestingly, they don't display in my browser that lacks javascript. I'd guess there's something in the CSS that browser doesn't quite understand yet).

The icons on the advanced editor do seem to need Javascript; with it disabled, they don't appear at all - but if I'm reading the first post correctly, Tim, you're seeing some of them; it's only those after a certain point that aren't appearing.

So I don't think it's a javascript problem.

A "decrepit PC" running Windows 7 and Firefox v15?

My guess would be memory - ie I suspect the modern OS and up to date browser probably requires more than the PC has. (Usually these things will work with less than the minimum spec, but sometimes even AT that minimum, they can struggle.)

You could try increasing the amount of Virtual Memory it's using - but you might find that slows things down noticably. Or you could try a smaller, less resource hungry web browser, such as Opera.

Given that I'm only guessing, neither is a surefire solution, obviously, but they have to be worth a try.

Hi peeps. I first checked Javascript and yes it's switched on. Cheers Vince, I do have quite a few things running, but don't want to slow it down any more so won't increase the Virtual Memory. The PC is a spare - about 15 yo - wiped clean and loaded with that OS by a kindly friend. It's obviously creaking at the edges so I'll get cracking with the new one.

Thanks peeps for looking into this.
