I know that the IAB have over 4,000 registered students just in India (they have students in most parts of the world where UK accounting standards or GAAP are used) - but like the IFA, a student does not always have to register until they are ready to take their first exam, so I would be surprised if either one knew how many they had.

Came across some interesting figures today that you may find of interest.
This is the number of PQ's for the big six accountancy Bodies :
ACCA

CIMA
106,612
CIPFA
2,550
ICAEW
19,073
ICAI

ICAS

Right, thats started the ball rolling.
If anyone would like to add figures for other bodies such as IFA, AIA, AAT, ATT, IAB, ICB, etc. please add your information below.
kind regards,

Yes, but they have to be organisations practicing in the UK if you want to add some others (any idea how many AAT students there are... Not qualified, just students).

I'm fairly sure I were told this during an AAT event, but I can't understand my own note I'm afraid so don't have exact number of students.
In 2011, there were 23,975 new students. "Rentention of students and affiliates" was 48,475 with 9,212 students completing L4. All together, there were 271,408 assessments completed.
So a guesstimate of approximately 60,000 students I would say.

With the ACCA student figures I was thinking, ok, if each only sat one paper per sitting at an average price of £80 thats £27,960,400 twice a year in exam fee's alone.... No wonder BPP are happy to give them £50k per annum for platinum status training provider.
We're in the wrong business matey. Lets start our own supervisory body.
We'll get the start up money by auctioning off the rights to be prefered training supplier. Sonya, Dave, Brian, Nick, Jane, cutting my own throat here but what say we start the bidding at £100k... Unmarked used twenties are preferred.

Training is a very tough business to be in. I know all business is particularly at the moment but I'm also a partner in another small business and the two are complete opposites!
The things that are the most challenging are the fast turnover of customers and the costs associated with that. I.e once qualified they move on so we have to be constantly finding new customers. You may argue don't all businesses? Of course no business should be complacent but in our other business we've had loyal customers for 20 years!
And the constant changes in education and qualifications which means we just begin to catch our breath and before you know it we're having to invest massive amounts of time reviewing and updating learning materials, offerings and our website! Nothing ever seems to stay the same. It's quite exhausting.
I love the challenges though so I can't complain really!!!
KTC I think your figures are about right for AAT.
If there are no paragraphs in this then it must be my IPad!

Nope, You've made your bed, you've got to be the training provider pushing up the bidding (when Dave backs out we'll retract you're last bid and we've got him). Neil and myself are going to start our own professional body and retire to a pair of adjoining beach condo's on the proceeds of training provider licences, book deals and student exam fee's.
If you can get Dave above a quarter of a million we'll give you free use of the company learJet for business meetings at the Condo's... I'm thinking either Thailand or the Caribean for our empires nerve centre.
We've just got to get the balance right of failing the students enough so they keep paying to retake the exams but not so much that they give up.... Oh heck, do you think maybe we've given away too much of our cunning plan!

Seems that both the IAB and ICB seem to play the numbers pretty close to their chests.
According to Wikipedia it's 150k members and students but we all know how useful Wikipedia is (my sons TEACHER!!!! was giving out coursework stating that the black death was spread throughout Europe by Beavers... because he took it of Wikipedia.... Almost makes the teachers who just put a DVD on the subject on whilst they go for a coffee seem like the good ones).
The figures that I started with were just students, not members although I'll add that info when I have it.
all the best,
Shaun.
