Hello all

Could anyone tell the website(s) that self-employed bookkeepers need to regulary check for legislation and tax issues.

I was once told to check the direct gov site but I could not find relevant information on that website.  It did not seem straight forward to me. no

I know we can use this site for more specific bookkeeping issues.

Thank you.

You need to register as an Agent with HMRC and they send out regular newletters to keep you informed as to changes.

In itself its not enough and every year I purchase the Melville Taxation book (plus various other books including the latest versions of some ACCA study texts and updated exam kits from Kaplan).

Where you are only looking at basic tax scenarios then for tax matters simply purchase the Melville book each year and spend a couple of weeks working trough it.

Also keep your eye on the Financial Reporting Councils website here : http://www.frc.org.uk/Home.aspx

And sign up for the daily notifications from Accountingweb which keep you informed of changes and issues (thats where todays HMRC going after people who haven't broken any laws or regulations came from).

As you've identified, unless you know what you are looking for before you go there the HMRC site, business link and Direct Gov are about as much use as chocolate teapots.

hope that helps,

kind regards,

Shaun.

The new fandangled DirectGov jobsearch website is appalling. I have signed up but can't for the life of me find anywhere near the amount of jobs that used

to pop up on the old site. I have noticed however, that the vacancies that are advertised seem to be via agencies. Nothing against agencies but i used directgov

to (previously) get my CV straight into employers.

Hi Neil, it's forgotten my User Name and therefore password - no wonder I'm not getting the emails.   Government and IT reminds me of fish and bicycles.
