Tax and NI on bonus
Permalink Closed

I have been asked to process bonuses of £10000 net and £5000 net in payroll which we're paid by cheque on 3rd and 4th December. Does this mean it will only be processed in next weeks payroll with a processing date of the 12th? (Last processing date was the 5th) and also do I just add a new payment as a bonus make sure its net to gross and the system will calculate the tax and NI accordingly or is there different tax implications on bonuses?

Bonuses are just extra salary, but unless they are paid regulary not considered contractral.

So you are correct in thinking that you just add the payment to make sure its net to gross with the system calculating the tax and NI as normal.

Does this mean you put the payment as a gross amount that when NI and tax have been deducted it would be £10000 and £5000?

Hi Steve,

Yes that is correct. The payments were to be 10,000 and 5,000 net (after tax and ni had been deducted). Most payroll software can calculate the gross figure given the net (well, I say most, I only have experience of 3).

Thanks everyone. I have gone into the add payment and can see gross payment, net payment, salary and bonus already on there but when I try to get into them they are grey. I have unclicked net to gross and it allows me to enter into the boxes but when I click for net to gross again it only puts the gross payment on and no bonus?

Any ideas? Thanks
