With so many software options available, I'm not sure why you would want to process a payroll using Excel. If you're offering payroll services, then you could look at software such as Moneysoft or 12Pay. If you're just dealing with one business, then they could download the free HM Revenue & Customs Basic PAYE Tools software (provided that it has no more than nine employees).

Exactly right, Peasie. Now that RTI is here unless someone wants to write a large and complex piece of Excel VBA for filing RTI returns (a task that VBA is poorly suited to) there is no longer any point in the concept of an Excel payroll.
