Can anyone tell me if this can be done? I don't want to use a Cloud accountancy package, such as Xero, I just want to back up my files, (Excel, Word, pdfs and Sage backups) somewhere remote. For two reasons, 1 - if my computers and back up drives failed at the same time (unlikely but you never know) I could still retrive the information and 2 - my clients can have access to their data when they want it.
I'm looking for something that I can log into, then perhaps set up a folder per client, that is password protected so only that client can access it, then within that folder I can set up folders and save files as I like. Just like saving onto a flashdrive, but a remote one.
As Mark and Helen have said, DropBox is the way forward! You can use it as a web based drag and drop file storage system, or download the program from the website and install on your desktop/laptop. This installs a 'program' looking icon on your desktop which behaves just like a normal folder does on your computer, you can then have a 'client' folder, and in that all your clients with separate folders. These in turn can be 'shared' with the client and they are the ONLY ones (other than yourself) that can look at the folder contents.
A VERY handy system as you can install this 'program' on more than one computer and everytime you save something to it it syncs to each computer AND online! Dont know how i could live without it now!
If you want a futher explanation as to how this works then just ask! but before you sign up get someone to refer you! that way you both get a little bit extra in storage space! 500mb i think!!! :D (email me you email address and I will send you one out! ;) lol)
(just thought I'd add that the level of encryption on the site for data protection is of a comparible level to that used in online banking... so VERY secure!)

I use Skydrive from Microsoft, it does everything that Dropbox does but you get 7gb of storage space, for free! I signed up early and i got 25gb!
I have also used drop box on an old XP machine and found it to be just as good, but Skydrive gives you much more storage, i use it for all my business files as well as all my photos. It comes with a really good pictures interface and works really well with my Windows Phone.

Cheers for your comments, I'll def be having a look at Dropbox.
Just quickly though, any idea what happens to your data if Dropbox or the like go bust, or if they suffer a disaster, fire, erthquake etc? I'm a worrier and can see myself still storing at home as well as online.
