Basically 507 pages divided down into 8 topics of setting up a new practice properly.
Not exactly an operations manual but more of a strategy guide to get you thinking about all of your strengths and weaknesses with a load of what if's thrown in.
A warning though. Its written for grown ups so don't expect freindly dummies guide type reading.
Now the big question is why don't our professional bodies tell us that this document is out there!
Have fun,
Shaun.
p.s. if anyone knows of any other similar manuals (operations, strategy, etc.) then please post links in this thread.

In between the fight with Bob (yep, same fights, same person, different site) there's actually a load of really good marketing advice for setting up a new practice. I even just bought one of the recommended books from it myself ("How to write sales letters that sell").
hope that you find some gems buried in there yourselves,
all the best,
Shaun.
p.s. no probs Georgie. Just one more service that I offer.

When I first saw the heading on the thread, I must admit I thought it was someone new setting up with a little experience and wondering what they needed to do etc, then I saw it was posted by you and I changed my mind
Good to see you still fighting with Bob (and the mention of the name still makes me think of Blackadder, which i guess is not a bad thing on a Friday afternoon)
No probs Mark and totally understand your first assumption.
Beyond the weekly BKN newsletter most threads quite naturally start as questions rather than assistance / advice.
Whilst we do get a lot of questions from those just setting up I don't always think that the questions are at the right level to give the best advice for the people out there wanting to set up serious businesses that whilst they may start at the kitchen table have the potential to develop into something much more.
The alternate level of questions I'm thinking of are the "I'm being made redundant on Monday and I need to set up a bookkeeping practice by Thursday at the latest. I have no previous experience in this field and have not studied anything for the last twenty years but the person from the training company told me that there was unlimited work in this field and I should easily be making £35k+ in my first month if I just give them £1500 now.... How many clients would you advise that I take on during my first week?".
The wake up call advice for those people cannot hope to assist those somewhat further up the tree and we have both sets of readers on this site so if ever I come accross anything useful I just like to put it out there for others in a similar boat to myself... Not totally void of knowledge (although sometimes I feel it) but not quite KPMG yet either.
Hope that you have a good weekend,
all the best,
Shaun.
