Hi all

Im finishing a course at the moment will complete in about 4 months so its going to be a couple of mmonths before i enrol with the ICB, what i want to know is there any textbooks out there that will take me up to level 2-3 im thinking of the arthur cox book?

I want this book before i commit to a expensive payment plan and get to level 1-2-3 and find bookkeeping is not for me

thanks

Hi Steve,

Try this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Frank-Woods-Book-keeping-Accounts-5th/dp/0273646192/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1360837387&sr=8-2

That's a bargain at that price. I own a 6th edition of this book but nothing has really changed with bookkeeping.

Probably the best £3.80 you will have spent for a long time.

Good luck with your studies.

Hi Neil,

that one's the 2001 edition.

I'm assuming that it covers the basics of financial reporting standards in which case I'm prone to thinking that it's going to be out of date due to the IASB convergence work that went on between 2006 and 2010 making pre 2008 accounting texts next to useless but of course bookkeeping texts are pretty much timeless.

If you've got that one can you check the index and if it makes reference to FRS's and SSAP's then they're not going to be the correct versions.

One of the big disappointments in my collection is this one :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Accounting-Financial-Reporting-Standards-2003-2004/dp/0273683500/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1360838177&sr=1-2

it was never a cheap book but he fact that it's still published and half of the mentions standards don't actually exist anymore makes it a pretty dangerous text in the wrong hands.

I think that for a bookkeeping text the posters original idea of the David Cox book :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Business-Accounts-Accounting-Finance-David/dp/1905777922/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1360838351&sr=1-1

is sound.

For financial reporting standards that depends upon whether one is using UKGAAP or IFRS. I think that all of the bodies have gone down the IFRS route. With the ACCA even the UK variant uses IFRS.

For ICB / IAB level the Kaplan book

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Students-International-Financial-Reporting-Standards/dp/1847107087/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1360838560&sr=1-1

is fine. But for anything more advanced than noddy level financial reporting I wouldn't recommend it but would go instead with the PWC guides that can be found at :

http://www.iasplus.com/en/standards

Also, whilst waiting for ICB to start then for a general getting a grip of the subject it wouldn't be a bad idea to do the Opentuition lectures for ACCA paper F3 which would cover all of the ICB / IAB syllabus (plus some).

Hope that helps,

Shaun.

Oops....

I've got to start either typing faster or writing less... When I started writing only Neils first reply was there.

Don't worry, at £3.80 it will be more than worth it for the bookkeeping parts but just avoid anything that speaks about financial reporting standards.

Sorry.

Shaun.

After the David Cox book you should be very comfortable with ICB level III (but unless you come with exemptions I think you still have to do levels I and II).

You say expensive payment plan. Who are you thinking of going with? (sorry if I've asked you that previously).

Premier haven't released theirs yet and Eagle is IAB rather than ICB (also worth considering before you choose either path) but the other ones commonly recommended on the site are :

http://www.training-link.co.uk/section/45/1/icb_bookkeeping_courses/1eb1146cb37a8f0284cd62542781f2bd

and here

http://www.idealschools.co.uk/courses

and here

http://www.icbcourses.co/prices-and-enrolment.php

and here

Just want to make sure that you've checked out the best courses and best prices before making your decision.

HTH,

Shaun.

I plan to either go with training link or ideal, ideal seems the slightly cheaper option and they give you 10% further orders which is a small incentive.

Currently the course im doing is understanding antiques as dealing is a hobby of mine and this course does not finish for 4 - 5 months, but i have a lot of other dealers that are intrested if i start up my own bookkeeping service, it will be a mater of how fast i can understand the information and succesfully work through the courses

then its a matter of getting the right business information out there

thanks steve
