This is my first time on the forum (any forum to be exact) and was wondering if anyone could provide me with some advice around setting up my own part time bookeeping business...
I'm interested in doing some work for myself at home, preferably looking after small size business accounts, but im unsure where to begin ie) advertising to clients, software packages, prices, basic practical experience needed.
I dont know anyone with their own practice/bookkeeping business who could help me, so I would really appreciate anyones time.
A bit about me...I am AAT qualified and am halfway through CIMA. I currently work for a government public body, and I have experience in management accounts and auditing (external assurance), I'm worried i have no practical bookeeping experience per se.
Any advice would be greatly received?
Many Thanks,
Suzanne.

Welcome to the forum, this topic has been covered many times on the forum, indeed the same question was asked just a couple of days ago. You should be able to get advice also from the body who you gained your qualifications. If you look at the threads under the General Book-keeping and Accounting banner you will find a post entitled "just qualified lv 1&2 manual and 2 computerised bookkeeping NOW WHAT HELP PLEASE " Please read Shauns reply this may answer a couple of your questions.
Many thanks for replying. I was a bit unsure which banner this query sat under.
I have read the post you requested and found it very useful, thanks! And I will search for other posts as Shamus recommends.
Kelly raised a good question 'how far can you go with clients books' and Shamus replied ACCA state anything after trial balance is accountants territory. I'm just wondering as I am a CIMA student would I be able offer any additional services and exceed trial balance take it to profit and loss and balance sheet and get chartered accountants to sign them off?? but then I am talking about dealing with limited companies. Would you advise I stick to sole traders?
Some one should write a dummies version of setting up your own bookeeping/accounting business!!!
I was hoping your post would have had more offers of advice, I am afraid I am limited in the advice I can provide as I only deal with the rules and regulations of the ICB. If you are studying with any awarding body then it should be them you direct your questions to, a bit like hear it from the horses mouth lol.
oops, sorry, missed the post. (does happen occassionally espechially if it's a busy day and a post slips off the front page of recent posts which is the only explanation I can think of for missing it). At least you were in sound hands with Dave though.
a big belated welcome to the forum.
Cima is a lot more flexible than the ACCA and provided that you make no mention of your affiliation with CIMA I believe that they do not impose the same sort of restrictions on you...
Going self employed as a CIMA student is covered here :
After reading those two repost your updated quesions and I promise not to let your posts slip through the net again.
Hope that those links make up for my late picking up of the thread.
kind regards,
Shaun.

As long as you are registered for money laundering and have indemnity insurance you should be able to set up in practice, providing you dont go advertising your self as being a member of CIMA.
As you are AAT qualified you could apply to become a member in practice with them, thats how i started.
If it was me starting again, although the AAT does cover Limted companies (and busienss tax if you took that option) i would just start with sole traders, get the systems in place first. Then you can start thinking about IXBRL software/Tax software etc when you a bit of a decent income stream coming in.
Any problems or queries about AAT MIP just let us know.
All the best
