Please could someone pass on some info about payroll courses. I currently just work as bookkeeper but would like to get payroll under my belt as I feel this would open more doors for me with new clients. I have a full AAT membership and already looked at their payroll course's on the AAT website but they look pretty pricey. What I am looking for is something that isn't very expensive or free, or is this a long shot?
Hi Vicki. I'd thought the AAT ceased payroll courses three years ago. I've had a quick look at the site but would be grateful for a link at the pricey items you've seen.
From memory IAB do a leve 1 and 2 payroll course and CIPP do right through to master's degree level. I've struggled in the past to find other awarding bodies and the latter is expensive too.
I had a look at the AAT website a while ago when I first became self employed, I didn't realise that they had taken the payroll courses off. I thought that I had looked again since but obviously not. I have also looked today and can't see any.
I contacted the Home Learning College, they have an ICB Sage Payroll Management course that I'm interested in doing - it's is very expensive!
I've just had a look at some info for ICB but there are no prices on screen, so i'm not sure what the comparison will be. Thank you for bring both of them bodies to my attention. I think it's going to be a case of saving up. I'm so keen to get started!
Hi Vicki and James. Sorry didn't mean to exclude ICB - just I was told I couldn't cherry-pick last year and had to do all the computerised/manual bookkeeping up to level III. The same may not apply to Vicki, so please accept apologies.
James has kindly listed course providers and Premier, Training Link and Ideal come highly recommended, are available to comment regularly on here and often feature in the site awards (see Forum Information section). Home learning don't!
Payroll is a stand alone qualification, where it is recommended to do the bookkeeping first, it is not required, so you can do Payroll courses by themselves.
I am a qualified, full member of the AAT so do not need to do the bookkeeping side as this was all covered in the AAT exams. I am purely looking at payroll. I have been approached by many clients now and have had to turn people away because I have to idea where to even start with payroll. I really don't like telling clients that I can't do their work!
I don't suppose you two have any advice as to which course you think would be best for me, bearing in mind I am a part qualified accountant? Whilst looking through the courses ACCA did look quite enticing but I have two smallish children that take up rather a lot of time , so this will have to wait until they are older. I am just looking for something that will inform me of payroll and so that I can do the job accurately and confidently, to be honest learning the Sage part isn't essential.
Hi Vicki, I've been doing payroll since my teens but to start formal study, I bought three old AAT payroll books for under fifteen quid from Amazon. The old tax rates didn't bother me and I keep myself informed about legislation. Surprise, surprise, with RTI around the corner, choice is a bit more limited now :
You may prefer a correspondence or classroom course. Probably not a bad idea with RTI evolving on an almost daily basis. It's worth doing a search on this site for say, 'Payroll Study' to get more first hand tips and information. Either way, I'm sure it will be a relief to be able to offer the service and given time it may even bring clients your way.
Thank you for your adviceTim, I will definitely do more of a search on here. I have looked at a few books on Amazon but as you say the RTI that is coming in will probably change things but could also open more doors. Although, I did notice HMRC have a good instruction manual (if that's what you like to call it) on how to proceed with RTI.
Thank you again I'm sure I will get this sorted soon at a low cost hopefully
Vicki
Hi Tim
I have found a couple of AAT past papers for payroll for Level 2&3 with Cheif Assesors Report.
I don't suppose you could point me in the right direction of how to get books? I have looked on EBay but they seem quite old. Would there be anywhere on here that I could find some second hand ones? I'm pretty sure with BPP text books I used the Course Companion and the then the Revision Book!
Really excited about getting started with it as I totally loved every second of my AAT!
Thanks
Vicki
