pay calculation for mid-month leaver

Can someone help me out here please?

New employee started on 1 April and resigned on 24 April.  He had statutory 28 days annual leave.

Am I right in thinking the following?

1 April Easter Monday = holiday

working days up to 23 April as normal

24th he didn't work, said he would take it as holiday but as he'd used 1 day holiday on 1 April he would only have half a day left so wouldn't get paid the other half a day.

There is no detail in his contract on how partial months are calculated, would you use calendar days or proportion of working days?

Thanks in advance.
