HMRC sent me the wrong National Insurance number
Permalink Closed

One of the employees in sage payroll passed the Employer alignment submission. He had confirmed that all of his details were correct.

However HMRC sent a NINO correction to the IR secure mailbox and I applied this new national insurance number, then noticed he had a P9 notice too so tried to apply this but it came up with an error saying this employee can't be found.

The new national insurance number HMRC had given was missing the letter at the end. I changed the national insurance back to his original and the P9 was applied successfully.

Whats the point in HMRC sending out new things to apply if they are incorrect? It makes me wonder if new tax codes are incorrect too.

HMRC is sending out all the NINO correction notices shorn of their final letter. This is creating a lot of problems and they're apparently urgently investigating how to correct it.

I had a batch of National Insurance numbers missing the letter at the end. Seems the software folk are not happy with HMRC.
At least the RTI details are beginning to appear as are last year's figures.

Well, these 8 letter NI Numbers are in violation of HMRC's own stated rules (booklet E13, Page 19).

I never saw your reply when I was making my post (despite the two minute gap - spent too long writing three sentences). My comment was based on a posting of yours on UKBF.
Just in case my post appears sarcastic.

Not at all. No problems here.

I hope that you didn't object to my "shorn" reference! biggrin

Incidentally HMRC advice (for passing on to our clients at least, but why not spread the love?) is that the 8 character NINO advice notices should be ignored. They've stopped issuing new notices for the moment, but the ones they've already published to their servers are continuing to be collected by employers unfortunately.

To late for me - I'd automatically applied the update from Sage 50 Payroll.

Can I mention the client who just received a new notice of coding for 2013-14 which has been forwarded to me with the following:

1. Wrong NI Number
2. Personal allowance for someone over 76 on 5/4/14 (the client is has a few years to go before getting to retirement age)

Fortunately she has recently unofficially stopped working for this employer (no p45) as she is now completely self-employed.
