Windows update auto shut down

Does anyone know how to stop Windows 7 from shutting itself down to update?  It doesn't care what is open on the desktop, and if the notification windows opens behind another, I don't even know its happening.  Surely there is a way of turning this off??

Go to 'Control Panel' then ' System and Security' under Windows Update click 'Turn Automatic Updates on or off' and play with the settings.

Hey Spam

I thought I had turned this off but it was still showing as auto. I've changed it to download updates, but let me choose whether to install them... hopefully what will sort it :) TA!
