I have a new client who wants me to do his return.
Client is a motor trader, and he buys & sells vehicles under his own name (self employed) but also receives a "wage" from the owner of the dealership he sells at for selling their vehicles. His wages appear to be paid on an hourly basis, but are paid in cash & no tax/NI deducted. To start I think this is WRONG, but it is not really my clients fault that his employer is not dealing with the PAYE correctly.
When doing his return, would I put the "wages" under employment income? (I don't think the employer has a PAYE ref etc) or just treat it as self employed income as part of his self employment?
Another issue is that he is claiming a lot of petrol - around £100-125 per month. He is only selling around 1 vehicle under his own name a month & I know you cannot claim for commuting to an "employed" place of work. However it is also where he sells his self employed vehicles. His home address is around 10 miles from work, so this looks about right for a commuting cost of fuel.
