Can someone fail an exam/degree and then be awarded a first class degree

Not necessarily in accounting but basically I've been told that someone I know failed either an exam or degree (I'm not sure exactly) but they got results back from something and it was a fail. They then appealed and not long afterwards were awarded with a first class degree.

Just out of curiosity is this possible? Or do think this is a little embellishment biggrin

What I'm thinking is the failure may have arisen at the last module/exam of their degree if that sounds right?
