Hi I read on here not so long ago that you can go from level 3 ICB to AAT Level 4 is this right?

I've passed the ICB level 3 exams including Payroll and the Tax Returns Diploma - is this enough to go to level 4? It would be great so skip level 3 - I know the AAT website has a skills check but I get the feeling this will always advise you to start at level 3.

Thanks

Hi Rachel,

It depends on the training provider, but my opinion is no.  The ICB level 3 doesnt cover any budgeting and management accounting.  This will make these units at level 4 very hard as there is some assumed prior knowledge.  You will be fine on the financial accounting aspect though.

You will also not have covered VAT  or ethics n much detail and you will have had no experience of spreadhseets. Whilst these are not crucial for level 4 they would be useful if you want to be a "well rounded" accountant.

Sorry this isnt probably the answer you are looking for

Nick

Hi Nick,

not for myself but for site advice in future, reading your response it seems apparent that whilst there is much missing there is also some crossover.

I know that AAT is modular so would there be an option for people such as Rachel being given exemption at least from the level III accounts prep module? (which would really seem to be the only real equivalent crossover).

It's only a small concession that might prove the carrot needed to get people to move to accountancy.

kind regards,

Shaun.

p.s. congrats on tutor of the year.

Hi Rachel,

now why didn't you open with the ATT line, lol.

Respect. I've got it earmarked as CPD once I finally put the ACCA qualification to bed.

Don't hate management accounting. It may seem alien at the moment but once you understand it its actually quite fun and unlike financial accounting its all completely logical.

Trust me, have you ever seen the episode of the Simpsons where they get the dog Santa's little helper. The dog doesn't understand a word that they say but towards the end of the show it goes through a sequence of what the dogs hearing going from random sounds to completely understandable speech.

Costing can be a little like that. It seems complete gobbledigook for starters but for no apparent reason one day you will be looking at it and for no reason it will all make complete sense and from there forwards you will never understand why you didn't understand it.

kind regards,

Shaun.

Hi Shaun,

Sorry for coming accross as a bit negative (and after reading it i agree) AP 1 and 2 should be Ok, but there will be costs and revenues, professional ethics, VAT and spreadhseets that will need to be passed.  So there is some benefit.

And, having the ATT could mean exemptions from the optional units at level 4, so looking back there are plenty of exemptions could be had.

To be honest, i never liked management accounting, which is probaly why i went ICAEW rather than ACCA.  I think some people like management accounting, and others like the IFRS world.

Kind regards

Nick

P.S. Thanks Shaun, i know this sounds like some PR guru written Oscar awards ceremony awards speach but i wasnt expecting it! I am on holiday this week so as soon as i found out, i went back to reality with looking after my 3 months old daughter, who keeps being sick, and then painting my kitchen ceiling.  Very Hollywood!!!
