There is no reason why you can't have a higher salary, maybe your normal £1k plus a bonus of £7k but of course you need to run payroll properly and make the relevant submissions for RTI. So long as HMRC get paid the tax and NI on it then no problem with them, it shouldn't cause the wrong kind of attention but they will know what you say is being paid and so therefore you must pay it!.
