Is it still possible to get printed copies of all the guidance etc on Self Assessment, VAT etc? I used to have these when I was working for a company 3 years ago but am now starting up on my own. Old school I know but I find it easier to read and understand from paper than rummaging on web based documents.
Tried to establish whether this was possible on HMRC site but couldn't figure it out.
I don't think they now issue printed copies at all as it's all there on the website. You can print off your own copies of the PDF documents though, although expect to use a ton of paper and ink!
Like yourself I'm old school and do not like to read web pages for information so where there are documents that I use a lot I still print them out.
As a result I also started refilling my own printer cartridges!

It's annoying when the Updates/Bulletins which used to be all contained within the same booklet now have links to pages elsewhere. I like to read something from cover to cover not click links to read the remainder of the article and then when you click to get back you are not taken back to where you last were but back to the start of the section.

thanks everyone I suspected as much. What a pain - its hard to flick back and forth on a website which is what I had to do in the books when trying to decipher VAT on electronically supplied!
I agree! Peasie - I offered a suggestion to HMRC about the fact that the links never take you back to where you were when they should (and indeed some of the links not opening without copying and pasting from some of their updates , notably the VAT ones) - they have advised me that they will be undertaking some work on this in the New Year. Watch this space, but dont hold your breath.
I too like to read from a document - mostly because I can do so in front of the telly or on the train, rather than staring at my PC all day. In fact doing the latter has given me really bad eye strain so I have to take a few days away from the screen as they hurt so much!
Good luck Alison - they certainly do not make it easy, except you dont need to wait on the post any longer!

I've worked at financial institutions where they have been using HP monitors and ended up having to take my own in as I refuse to ruin my eye's because some businesses think that all monitors are the same.
You could also try taking up the refesh rate of your screen. Most setups default to 60Hz but 75Hz plus is much better for reducing eye strain (providing your monitor can take 75hz).
Don't know how you manage to read in front of the TV. Then again, I'm miswired as if I walk into a store to buy something and they are playing music I have to walk back outside and write on my hand what it was that I went in for.... No, not an age thing, I've always been this way. Think that its something to do with the Dyslexia... Or maybe I'm just a head case!
Talk in a bit,
Shaun.

Thanks for the advice Shaun - but you are talking to a technopobe or as one of my customers described himself today - a computer illiterate! How do you alter the Hzs please?
I do all of my best work in front of the telly, ha - I just listen, hardly ever see what is on! Mind you I cannot concentrate with just music on and hate hearing it in shops too or worse still when trying to work (especially at a customers - in fact i almost screamed at one the other day to switch the damned rubbish off!). Music is only good for in the car.
You have Dyslexia? Well I never would have guessed nor knew - your answers are so well put together. Hope that doesnt sound condescending - its not meant to be! I do reckon you are a head case though - but a nice head case!
Laters!
