Someone I know is looking to get some tax relief back on travel and what he calls lodging allowance. He works away and uses his own van to get there. As far as I can see it would be a straightforward claim for mileage allowance providing it is not the same place of work over 2 years.
The lodging allowance is paid by the employer at approx £80 a week which I assume is to cover meals etc (he stays in a caravan onsite) but i can't find any clear rules from HMRC on it. He is taxed on this but would he be able to claim tax relief? I'm leaning towards no but any pointers to the regs would be appreciated so I can gen up on my own knowledge
He may need a structural engineer for that subsidence! I assume he is employed John rather than self employed since you say he is taxed? I would think unless there is some kind of agreement with the industry and HMRC like the Road Haulage Association have then he won't have a claim but it's not an area I am all that familiar with.
