VAT on imports
Permalink Closed

I have a new client who imports jewellery from China.

She regularly receives invoices from DHL which show Duty and VAT that have to be paid on imports.

For example there was one today where the VAT was £296.93, the Duty was £43.24, and the Admin fee was £6.80.

Is the 296.93 allowable in the VAT Return?

Yes, but you should normally wait to receive the C79 form from HMRC before processing the invoice.

Hi Rob
I agree with Jenna. Ive just been involved in a VAT inspection for one of my clients who imports from China and the first thing they made a bee line for was the C79 and they made it clear thats what we should have prior to including it on the VAT return (and we did have, so we passed with flying colours!)

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

You should check out answers with reference to the legal position
