Hi Everyone,
I've been a passive member for sometime, reading posts but not contributing as I wasn't sure where I was going. As I now have a cleared idea I thought I'd say hello.
I've worked for charitable arts organisations throughout my career and learnt all my financial knowledge and experience on the job. A couple of years ago I was being made redundant and when looking for work people were asking about my financial qualifications. As I didn't have any I thought now would be the perfect time to, so AAT it was.
I'm hoping to qualify this year and start to build something up for myself. I'd like to work for myself or in a partnership. 1. to avoid the daily commute and 2. as we're hoping to start a family ( not right now but you know!). Sorry information overload!!!! I'd like to work with voluntary and charitable organisations as well as sole traders and small start up businesses to support them in becoming more efficient.
As well as bookkeeping I can offer support with cashflow forecasting and 1-3 year projections and strategy.
I'm currently meeting about 5 different people/ companies and offering advice to them to gain experience and to receive a testimonial in return. I'm not sure how to make the break from work to working for yourself when I have financial commitments such as a mortgage!
So this is probably the longest introduction ever so I'm going to stop. I look forward to getting to know you all. Thanks
Jo
Hi Jo
Welcome..... to your first post. Dont be afraid to pitch in to the posts on here or ask as many questions as you like. I was at first but everyone (apart from one in the early days) came back with a really friendly response. Its a bit quieter on here than usual - January is the silly season for all of us (and Ive not had as much time to check in as usual so Im sure a few others out there have been the same).
I would just say - get that first paying client as soon as possible (even whilst you are still at work) as that will start to give you more confidence. There are a lot of people out there who will happily let you do their books at home rather than trying to find you a desk at their premises, so then you can fit it round work/life and start to get used to the practicalities of working for yourself.
Good luck with it all.

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.
