Hi everyone,
I would like to introduce myself but
really don't know where to start.....
I have worked self employed within the building trade for over 20 years up until the financial meltdown which wrecked the trade and caused the liquidation of the majority of my clients.
Luckily enough I managed to get out without anyone owing me a huge amount of money(the house is safe)
That was back in 2009. After which I decided it was time for a change of career. I decided to undertake a BA in accounts as I had always taken care if the financial side of both my wife's business and my own, it seemed like a logical progression at the time.
After graduating more than a year ago now, I am still trying to secure a position which will allow me to progress to CA status. I am now wondering if I made the right choice.
I have been juggling some accounting / bookkeeping work with my old trade to get by the past months but am seriously beginning to wonder....
Anyone else relate to this?
Anyway ..... Hello
Can you expand upon what you mean in the last part about wondering whether you have made the right decision. Is it that you cnnot find any work as a bookkeeper / accountant or the work is not paying enough?
Sorry, don't want to go wading in answering the wrong question (although I'm getting pretty good at that).
Talk later,
Shaun.

Hi Shaun
Thanks for the reply.
What meant is that I thought that obtaining employment would have been easier after obtaining a degree.
Not that I mind being self employed, I am however basically starting from scratch in a new trade that I don't have 'on the job' experience.
I have a limited number of clients at the moment who range from Taxi drivers to off shore workers. Much of the work I have been doing to date is end of year accounts and tax returns.
This has also extended to payroll work for a couple of clients.
I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice on how to proceed as I would like to be able to rely on this type of work exclusively as a source of income.
Thanks
Stephen
Also ,
Would anyone be kind enough tot tell me why I'm not getting any spaces between paragraphs when I type ?
Seems fine till I actually post ... Using the mobile site??
Welcome to the site Stevie, Im sure you will find it useful - I certainly have! Cant say too much about the 'gaining employment after getting a degree', other than my son has two friends who have opposing stories. One has a 2:1 in Accounting and couldnt get a job - was London based and has just gone travelling instead. The other got a first but in Business with Accounting and has 4 options with big firms in Manchester. You just never know!! Re being self employed - a big chunk of us on here are self employed and at different levels in their careers/training but do make a good living from it (some - very good!). Get yourself out there - networking as much as possible. Get existing clients to introduce you to their friends/business colleagues (the best intros I find!) and dont be afraid to do some cold calling phone calls/use free advertising. Good luck! (sorry cant help with the last bit - Im still on a pay as you go old Samsung phone Ludite!!)

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

Hi Cheshire,
Thanks for the encouraging words. My apologies to all for my negative venting on my last post. I guess I'll just need to get my backside in gear and make this work! I have about a dozen clients at the moment and I am thinking of introducing a referral scheme or cash back incentive to widen my customer base. It seems to work for insurance companies etc, but I guess I'm gonna have some some trial and error for a bit before I figure out what's going to work.
I'm also hoping I can make some helpful contributions to the forum from my experiences along the way!
Thanks again
Stevie.
