Good afternoon everyone. I've joined the forum as I'm hoping to go freelance, doing bookkeeping and credit control. My previous experience covers sales ledger, purchase ledger, credit control, and lots of bookkeeping, but all for pretty big companies. I finished my last job 2.5 years ago when I had my first child. I've now finished having babies, and want to get back to work. I have always wanted to be my own boss, and feel that now is the right time. I have passed AAT exams up to intermediate level, and plan to resume studying to complete the qualification.
Of course I am having confidence wobbles at the thought of going it alone, but mostly related to the fact that I've not been thinking that way for the last couple of years. So I'm going over old study paperwork to refresh my memory, reading everything I can get my hands on, and making lots of lists and notes. I have also started helping a local charity with their bookkeeping, on a voluntary basis, to try and get my brain back into that way of thinking.
So, I'm here to learn as much as I can about starting and running a business, and about bookkeeping and everything that goes along with it. There is obviously a wealth of experience here on this forum, I hope I don't ask anything too idiotic!
Hello there and good on you for getting this far. I too am new but I've already obtained a couple of clients without even trying. I did loads of research and this forum is great and to know your not alone. If you've qualified with AAT maybe you should look into becoming a MIP, there are some good skill refreshers on AAT. I'm no salesperson so that's my draw back I'm afraid. Good luck.
Welcome to both Red and Jackie - dont be afraid to ask daft questions, cant get any dafter than mine!! We are here to learn as well as help others and occasionally have a laugh along the way!

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.
You should check out answers with reference to the legal position
Welcome both of you. You really have found a gem of a site with some really great people who will help you loads. You may also find they distract you loads, but that is part of the fun!
All the best
Nick

Well I won't be upset if I talk to some interesting people and have a laugh along the way :)
So, first question - I'm looking to buy Microsoft Office but there are so many versions I don't know which to choose. I can't imagine there is THAT much difference between Home and Student / Home and Business / Professional, but there might be differences in which version I would be "allowed" to use as a bookkeeper. Anyone know about this?
Feel free to resurect it if you want to add more questions but hopfully it will answer most of your immediate questions,
kind regards,
Shaun.
