Hi there - I am new to CIS and was wondering if someone could help me. Is it necessary to verify all subcontractors. I have seen that if they have been included on a CIS return in the last 3 years that they do not have to be verified. Therefore if you have a new subcontractor to the company and he says that he has been verified - you would just add him and all you would need is his UTR and NI number. How would you know for sure that he had registered for CIS.
I hope I am making sense! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
The 3 year rule applies to the current business. If any CIS returns have been submitted in the current or 2 previous tax years for this subbie then there is no need to re-verify his details. If he is new to this particular business then he will need to be verified.
I find that they absolutely need to be verified, as quite often Im told a load of incorrect rubbish!! As Gordon says - when they are new to you then you have to anyway. Plus its easy to verify them (and if you collect all the information you need to do so at the start of their 'working' for you then its easy to do the re-verification as required every couple of years).
