Hi, is there somewhere where I can check if a trading name is already taken? I am a sole trader not a Ltd company.

To protect a name you would register your trade mark with the IPO (Intellectual Property Office).

To find out if someone else has already got the name see here : www.ipo.gov.uk/types/tm/t-os/t-find/tmtext.htm

If its not there and you don't protect it then you can use it as can anyone else at the same time.

Worth doing a quick Google to see what comes up with any name that you choose and also do a webcheck to check out any incorporated version of it. Although quite different you don't want to go picking a name that is damaged goods.

i.e. I'm going to call my new business Enron. lol. bit of an extreme example there.

I did a google check then a website domain check to see if mine was taken. May I suggest a similar tactic? :D

when you go on the IPO web site -if you want to protect a name is it trade mark you chose?
