PAYE employees claiming washing uniform expenses
Permalink Closed

Hi, I have seen a lot of adverts (mainly facebook) where the company can help employees that wash their uniforms they are made to wear at work. Has anyone been asked about this by a client? Is it true? I bet there is a whole load of criteria to satisfy first.. Thanks Stuart

Hi Stuart,

When I worked in a bank with a compulsory uniform, the PAYE notice of coding included a £60 flat rate allowance for cleaning the uniform.  Seems to still be the rate, hopefully this link may work!  http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM32480.htm

Also mentioned on Martin Lewis website (it's a bit easier to read than HMRC lol)

Hope that helps.

Jackie

It is a standard flat rate for uniform laundry-it is easy enough to sort-hmrc will do it -don't use 3rd party companies

I've offered this service before to people who didn't want the hassle of doing it themselves. It was quite lucrative.

For the sake of 2 minutes to fill in a template letter to HMRC and the cost of a stamp I'd say it's definitely worth it hmm

Do you think it's worth offering it as a service for a no refund no fee kind of service?

I can't see why anyone would pay to do this when it is one quick phone call to hmrc ?

You'd be very surprised Sharon. People are scared of HMRC forms. Self assessment is normally pretty straight forward too, but how many people pay us to do it. It's about playing to your strengths too. Cutting my grass is easy, but I'd rather pay someone else to do it.

Kris I suppose that's true, some people would rather pay someone else than pick up the phone-I remember when I was employed by my last company I wrote to hmrc for all 500 employees to claim it -had to list everyone's name and Ni number -what a pain that was (before technology allowed us to extract that sort of info from the software ! )

And yes -I would rather pay someone to cut my grass too

I got rid of all my grass years ago. I didn't realise you could do it on peoples behalf, I just told our staff to do it themselves :)
