Questions about starting out as a freelance bookkeeper
Permalink Closed

Good Evening,

I am looking at changing careers from teaching to Accountancy (I have a degree in Accountancy but have never had a job in Accountancy). I have been advised a good way to build up some solid experience would be to do some freelance bookkeeping whilst looking for a job.

Some questions I have:

1. Is it necessary to register with HMRC even if you are doing it part time for a few sole traders or small business? If you do have to register with HMRC what sort of timescale are we looking at and at what cost?

2. Is it necessary to have specialised bookkeeping or accounting software? I only have Excel.

These costs would make it cost prohibitive to gain experience in this manner.

Thanks in advance.

1 - Yes. You have to either register with HMRC or be supervised by an accounting/bookkeeping body. (ICB/IAB/AAT etc).

2 - You can do it with Excel although the likes of VT Transaction+ is reasonably priced for multiple companies.
