VT question...How do you post VAT payments on account?
Permalink Closed

Hello I have a client who is VERY behind on his vat returns, however he is paying £100 a week to HMRC until the vat returns are completed.

Can anybody tell me how I post a payment on account of vat on VT? - he's been paying from his bank account by direct debit.

Thanks in advance

Rachel

Hi Rachel,

just treat as a VAT payment on account.

Cr Bank
Dr Creditors: Net VAT due

Which will give you a screwed up creditors amount until the you've sorted out the returns.

How are you getting on with getting the VAT returns into some semblence of order? (Whether filed or not).

Once sorted you will end up with a whopping Ceditors:Net VAT Due credit offset a little by the payments on account which eventually will give you your balancing figure to bring it all up to date.

Its simpler than it sounds.

Good luck with the client. Sounds as though you've drawn a bit of a short straw there.

kind regards,

Shuan.

Thanks Shaun, that's great.

I am actually only doing the bookkeeping - getting all the info in and the accountant wants to do the actual vat returns (the accountant gave me the work) so I'm doing the messy bit.

It's the most difficult and messiest work I have done so far BUT I am seeing light at the end of the tunnel and it's a good feeling after such frustration.

It has been a nightmare but I am glad of the work, although things have seriously taken off in the last few months, I have new clients appearing from everywhere! so part time is quickly moving into full time. Although this is only a one-off job, I take over the bookkeeping (monthly) for his other business after this is done.

I am starting to really like using VT now, I used to love sage but found that VT is much simpler. There are quite a few things I can't do/not sure of at the minute but I expect that will come and VT prices are much better than Sage.

Thanks for your Help Shaun

Rachel

Hi Rachel,

no problems at all, glad to help a fellow VTer.

VT is one of those hidden gems where it is able to do much more than people expect it to. And because its simple to use people are surprised at how powerful it actually is.

I think there is a certain amount of unlearning Sage to use VT properly as concepts such as closing off periods for everything except VAT is completely out the window (To me thats a good thing although others may disagree).

Where Sage wins though is on stock control as VT's not geared towards those sort of businesses.

kind regards,

Shaun.
