I have several cafés on my books -they tend to purchase lots from the local supermarkets and include their own shopping on there-look for purchases that you wouldn't expect in a cafe -including food stuff-one off items etc
The other problem some have is recording the sales -most of mine give me the till Z readings at the end of the day -they can be a nightmare to read
Hi Stuart VAT becomes an issue only on take away. The general rule being if it's hot then charge vat if it's cold then zero rate (except of course for standard rated stuff like crisps and canned drinks etc). There was a recent ruling about whether a sausage roll that has just been cooked is a hot takeaway or a cold one, the conclusion being that if the said sausage roll is not above ambient room temperature then it's zero rated. If the owner gets a till that has separate buttons for vatable and non vatable it will make your job easier if they attach the 'z' reading to a daily/weekly cash sheet.
