Changing from Sage Payroll to HMRC Basics
Permalink Closed

Morning!

I've decided the move one of my clients from Sage Payroll to the HMRC Basics PAYE program (they only have 4 employees and Sage seems a little pointless for the costs involved!). My question is, how do I go about putting the year to date figures on to the HMRC program? Is it a case of entering month by month and then doing the final submission every month? Does that then double up on the figures that the revenue have? Is there another, simpler way to do it?! Help!

Thanks

Hi Liz
Sorry not to answer your questions specifically as I dont know how the HMRC program works, although there should be a way of keying the year to date in something like the P11 section. I just wanted to advise that you cannot get payslips from this program as not many folk are aware of this fact.

Indeed there are a few other issues:-
The limitations to what the HMRCs Basic PAYE Tools can do are quoted from the HMRC website below:

HMRCs Basic PAYE Tools isnt a complete payroll package so it wont:

- produce payslips
- record any other deductions unrelated to PAYE such as an attachment of earnings

It also may not handle certain scenarios:

- certain changes in directors NICs category letters during the tax year
- you enter a leaving date for an employee and subsequently want either to change the leaving date or re-start the employment
- an employee reaches the age of 16 and becomes liable for NICs but you can switch to category A mid-year if you have already set them up in the Employer Database with an X against their NICs category
- you operate net pay arrangements

If any of these scenarios arise during the year and youre using HMRCs Basic PAYE Tools, youll need to start using a commercial payroll software package and transfer all your employer and employees details to it or change to using a payroll provider. So it might be worth looking at some of the cheaper than Sage offerings out there - Moneysoft or 12Pay are highly recommend by me and other users on this site.

+1 for Moneysoft

I've used 12pay and it is also good.  Main reasons for switching to Moneysoft were much better CIS function, which I don't have to pay extra for with Moneysoft. and better designed payslips (imo)
