New business..what would you recommend?
Permalink Closed

I've been looking long and hard at different software. There's so much to choose from with such big price changes. I'm on quite a tight budget at the moment and am as a rule am taking on new and small businesses. So don't need anything too complex. Any advice appreciated

Hi Ben, if it's all pretty small clients why not stick to Excel, no need for fancy software then

I currently use my own excel sheet...What stage would you recommend moving onto software?

When you have quite a few suppliers and customers and maintaining the ledgers gets too complicated. That's not to say getting some cheaper software isn't a bad idea but since I use Sage and your budget is tight I'll let others make some suggestions.

Depends on your budget

1. Excel is free but when you need to maintain sales and purchase ledgers it starts to get difficult to maintain

2. VTcashbook is free but only works with cash based businesses (not giving or receiving credit)

3. VTtransactions costs a couple £00 per year and you can maintain sales and purchase ledgers

4. There is a whole host of online providers with prices ranging from £5+VAT - £29+VAT per month per client dependent on what you need from it.

5. SAGE - if you are doing it for a number of clients would advise to get client manager and price will be whatever deal you can get from SAGE.  For instance for 25 client package have heard prices ranging from £300+VAT - £1200+VAT per month.

What about Quickbooks, its easy to learn and if you are brave enough you can just buy it from Amazon and then have the 30 day support and then come on here for support.

VT Transaction is a one off cost. No need to pay annually. It's only the Accounts that is annually licensed :)

Learnt something today.  Goes to prove that dont actually use VT at the moment but will be offering it as a desktop alternative to SAGE.  Although most clients who are using an accounts package tend to prefer an online option.

Hi Mark,

I don't think that VT would run on an iPhone but if a Tablet PC runs the full version of Windows (for example the Microsoft surface Pro) then you could run VT transaction+ on it.

Patch that in with holding your data in dropbox and wallah, an impromptu (if somewhat tyre levered) cloud option with your data available whereever you are and VT licencing allowing you to put transaction+ on as many devices as you use (they charge per user, not per installation).

And you can still work on the file if the inter web should go down. The drop box will then update the saved files when the interweb returns! ( We had internet problems twice last year and it lasted more than a day on both occasions!)

I quite like the look of VT at the moment. Is that a bit backwards do you think?
I see all this excitement about cloud but are clients snapping it up?

Why do you think VT might be a bit backward?

Is that a comment on its looks, feel or that its a desktop solution?

I think that the main excitement about the cloud comes from those that are selling it.

im really liking quick file :) its a cloud one.

Have a look at the website. they give you a complimentary £10 credit. they have a pricing structure part on their website if you want to look at costs. but it seems very reasonable to me.

 Hey Ben,

I agree with Amanda. QuickBooks really helps make business more streamlined, systematic and organized.  Since you are new and small business and have low budget, I will recommend QuickBooks cloud hosting for a hassle-free financial management system.
