Help! My first bookkeeping job and I dont know if we are registered with HMRC yet
Permalink Closed

Hi, I am doing my first job as a bookkeeper. My client was registered with HMRC at the end of Sept 14 and needs tax return submitted - registered for online returns too. She is yet to receive any communication from HMRC. How long does this normally take? Should she call them considering the deadline is fast approaching? We haven't got a tax return form - is there anywhere I can get this from? HMRC are on strike today so not answering the phone much.

We haven't set up the agent route yet so I cant call.

Thanks

BeSte

If they are registered (or registering) for online returns then the deadline is 31st January. The 31st October deadline is only if your submitting a paper return. Or do you class 31st January as fast approaching? If so you might be in for a shock when some clients turn up the week before the deadline and expect it done.

Probably best to get her to call, however you have until 31st January to submit the tax return if doing it on line and I think the deadline for paper will be 3 months following the registration rather than 31st October. But probably get your client to call to ascertain this is right.

Oh no, 31st Jan is totally fine. I didn't want to be in a position where we were too late for paper and too late for registration for online too. She doesn't have a UTR yet which is why I panicked.

But I've done a bit of reading this afternoon and I think you are right, as long as we have applied for tax reg by 5th Oct and then online return by something like 21st Jan, then I don't need to stress about missing Oct deadline. (paper always feels safer for some reason )

Thanks

BeSte

Hi from memory its about 3 weeks to get a UTR letter, although with the 5 October deadline they may take a few more days. Its about 7 days for an activation code

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

You should check out answers with reference to the legal position
