I have a self employed client who has given someone who does some of his paperwork (self employed also) a gift voucher for a retirement gift. Is this an allowable expense?

I would say no.. I'd normally put it to entertaining and gifts, in a limited company, so that the directors could at least have the cash out of the company - but it gets disallowed for both sole trader and company on the tax comp - and so, unless they have paid it out of the business bank account, I wouldn't even bother including it.
