hello, 

i have lost my plastic card with my national insurance number on it and do not know my number off by heart, i am pretty sure that my work has the correct number as i have been using the same number for 10 + years in 3 different jobs. 

i was just wondering if hmrc pick up on your national insurance number if it is wrong? will they know if the number doesnt match my details? i dont want my contributions going to someone else. i will call them in the new year to confirm this but am just looking for advice in the mean time

Surely you have some other correspondence with the NI number on it - letters from tax office (or other related offices eg job centre/tax credits etc etc) or wage slips/P60s? You should keep all tax papers for c6 years. Then you can check your previous work info with your new one. i have had 2 jobs in the last 11 years both on paye, never claimed a benefit and have no letters from hmrc which could confirm this. i have p60s and payslips with my national insurance number on them but surely thats not clarification as i would of given this number to my employer. would the tax office know if my national insurance number didnt match my personal details on my p60?. its not really connected to my last post.

You could try phoning the National Insurance helpline on 0300 200 3500
