A UK company used to sell goods to my client, charging VAT with UK VAT number. Now I see they appear to have relocated to Spain, and have a spanish VAT number (Begins with B) but they still show "GB VAT at 20%" - well I think Spain has a 21% VAT rate, so I don't think this is spanish tax in GBP
I am unsure about this how to proceed - the UK VAT number is no longer on the invoice.
Has anyone seen this before? Can I still claim the VAT?
Sounds like they have forgotten to update their invoices since moving, perhaps.
Isn't the VAT issue just a reverse of if your company was sending goods to Spain, ie can be zero rated if the Spanish co quote their VAT number on their invoice, but also your clients VAT number including the GB bit and can prove that the goods have been sent direct to UK (evidence of removal).

I don't know why the client is being charged VAT to be honest. It's only just started, as the supplier was based in London til recently. I've emailed the client about trying to get the invoices re-issued without VAT, but I'm wondering what I can do if the supplier won't back date.
Bloomin' VAT again!
I would say that the commercial answer if the supplier will not back date is for your client not to pay the invoice until they do, or perhaps even the VAT element of the invoice. Although Im guessing its already paid so that doesnt help you. If they will not back date - can they get a credit note and re-invoice?
My understanding is that they cannot claim the VAT back in the UK unless the UK suppliers VAT number and prefix are on the invoice, although in practice this would only be picked up on inspection so if its a one off.....do and warn?

Well, that's other thing I have asked him to query... it's possible the document he is supplying, has omitted the UK VAT number.. there's no telling if they closed VAT registration when they moved. They may have dual reg.
