Tax code notices
Permalink Closed

Hi

I complete payroll for a company and am listed as their agent. On 28 February I received an email to say there was a coding notice so I duly logged on to HMRC - can see '2' coding notices in the list for this client but when I click on it there is nothing there.  If I go via the client then there is nothing showing what-so-ever.

Now I do understand that one member of staff did receive a coding notice recently as I received a call from the comapny about it.  She gave it to her boss but unfortunately he is now in hospital after a heart attack.

Anybody else had anything similar/know an easy way to resolve without resorting to me phoning the phone number that never gets answered at HMRC?

Hi Joanne

Just a thought - I started to receive my coding notices for 2015-16 last week (and unendingly ever since!!), and when you click through there is nothing present. You then have to manually change the tax year from the default of 2014-15 to 2015-16, and they magically appear. Ever year, this ridiculous system annoys me!

Anyway - I would guess you've probably already tried this, but thought I'd throw it in as a suggestion.

Hi Helen
DOH - no I didnt think of that one. Knew that I would be starting to get them but was so focussed on the phone call telling me that one was issued a while ago. When I looked again after your post - of course the one they are talking about is there, but of course not starting yet!

In fact there was also one from a member of their staff who left MONTHS ago - and he was P45'd out under RTI...just proves it doesnt work, the numpties!

Thanks for throwing in the suggestion, was a great help!

HI Joanne,

I have this the other day and yes you have to change the tax year and then they magically appear, they are sending them out early ready for the new tax year.

You're not going mad, Joanne.

I get notified by email but it doesn't say which User ID it is regarding.

So I've been in and out like a jack-in-a-box to each client's log-in, current year and 2015-16 and the codes definitely weren't there until today.

The only thing I could do is get them sent to different email addresses.

Tim

I use payroll manager, for all my client payrolls.

I can download PAYE notices (in the tools) which put it against the correct employer. It also gives me the option to change the tax code for the employee. There are 3 boxes which they get put into, New (for the current year), Next year and Archive.

I send all my clients a RTI approval email from it, but before I do, I do a quick download check and pick up any notices, so I can do any updates before emailing the client.

Thats Tim - good to know Im not quite barking yet! It is annoying about the user IDs and I dont know about you but I get two of every email and no thats not my eyesight failing!

Frauke - what a star. Ive just tried that little gem, had no idea about it (note to self - do more Payroll manager training) - that is so much quicker than accessing the HMRC site! Will just run that every time I run the payroll now.

Have either of you ever had a coding notice for a (very long) gone employee? RTI pants!

Thanks all

Apart from 'crossing in the post' I've only had one case of coding notices continuing to arrive and that was where the P45 was submitted just prior to RTI but seemed to disappear into a black hole.

Wish I did get 2 emails.   You know when HMRC issue 2 codes on one day because the first one was wrong?  I don't think they like to admit that so I only got 1 email - which I actioned straight away....... producing a monthly PAYE bill double the usual.  Q pandemonium.

I get the two emails thing. I put it down to me putting my email address in for the Employer - so they'll be sending for Employer and Agent.

I remember these messages from last year so found mine when they started coming. The tip about Payroll Manager sounds good, I'm going to look for that now. Love this site...

HMRC staff have actually been told that they should not refer to the RTI submissions (!) before they do things, as it may mean they take longer to do what they need to do. !!!!!

Why does that not surprise me!!!  An admission that RTI doesnt work - but lets plough on regardless!

Interesting Frauke. Does it take longer because the amounts and dates in FPS submissions are rushed and unreliable ? I say this in view of the fact that the recent HMRC 3 day period of grace isn't an easement but an abolition.

Submissions are still required soon; too soon for small businesses but it ain't real time.
