Hi. Not sure where to start really. Basically I have just completed all my Manual and Computerised Bookkeeping courses and have passed all three. I am in the process of applying for my practice license from the ICB. In the meantime, what advice would anyone give to someone like me who has a fist full of certificates but have had no ''real-life'' experience as yet? Do I go straight into working for sole-traders or would it be best to try and get supervised work? I need to build up confidence in taking the first few steps on my bookkeeping journey. I think have the ability (and I certainly have the determination!) to succeed, but maybe just need that little bit more from experienced folk to advise on the best way to start.
Maybe if you have extra work that you may need help with?
Many thanks guys!

A fellow ICBerr here, sadly the only thing you can do now, that you have qualified - is to go for it - Advertise .... network .... your little socks off and if you struggle ask. Also have you attended any ICB branch meetings !! they are a good place to meet fellow bookkeepers in your local area ?
Cheers Trevor. I intend to start ICB meetings as soon as I can. I work full-time as a long distance delivery driver, but I am looking to cut back on these hours to spend more time on my bookkeeping interests. I hear they are good for any info I need, so will definitely give that a go. It's just the ''going into the unknown'' that slightly worries me, but I know there are folk out there who can help me on my journey. Many thanks for taking the time to read (and put an advisory opinion to) my post. Kind regards.
I was at the last Cardiff ICB meeting - with Gary Carter as guest speaker - and he said they are about to restart the practice builder sessions (greatly cheaper than last time) so it would be really a good idea to go along to your nearest branch meeting (the sessions will usually be before the branch meeting). They are also starting a new mentoring scheme (as per newsletter yesterday).
At the last meeting there were bus drivers and others in work wanting to make the change, but I guess its really hard if you have an existing income. Perhaps you could build up a financial buffer for the change and maybe go back to your old job if it doesn't work out.
I'm taking in everything you say and with great appreciation. I will look at the branch meetings dates in my area (Middlesbrough/North East) They sound an invaluable source of information on which I can build my future. ...short OR long term. Many thanks Trevor.
