Hi,

I have a new client and need to file payroll for April (already late!) but can't get my software to talk to HMRC or access the online system either. This is the first one I have done so I just want to check whether anyone else has noticed any issues with HMRC?

Thanks

Alys

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

Hi,

Thanks Joanne, that's a really useful site to know about!

I think there is something wrong with the info I have been given by the client as I can now access all areas and have downloaded the HMRC tools to try to use them directly but even they wont work. As this is the first time I have used the service I'm not sure what I should be expected to see. From reading what you have to do to set up as an employer you either need to reset your self assessment login to being an organisation or set up a second login. As the client has a PAYE and tax office reference she must have done one of these. However, when I log in to her gateway account I can only see info about self assessment and tax returns, I'm guessing she has a second login and has given me the wrong one!

If someone can either confirm my assumption or suggest an alternative then I would be very appreciative as I'm not sure where to go next. I can't speak to HMRC on her behalf as I'm still waiting for my Agent ID (it will be 6 weeks on Monday) and then it will take who know how long to get registered as her agent and she's already late with her first month's submission. I have asked her to check for additional login details and how she obtained her PAYE ref.

Frustrated of Preston!!

Thanks

Alys

Hi Alys

No, it is perfectly possible for an employer to set up as an employer without creating an online account, they are separate processes. Usually if I do the set up for a client, I don't bother to set up their online login for PAYE, as I use my agent one for them. I give them the details so they can if they choose to, but quite a few don't bother as they never intend on doing anything themselves!!

It sounds like this is what your client has done - presumably assuming you will use agent details. She can add it on to her services on her online account, but will need to wait for the activation code to come through.

You may want to chase up your Agent ID - they normally come through pretty quickly (other than self-assessment & corporation tax which you have to do by post, and take forever).

Hope that helps - albeit probably not quite as you would have wanted, sorry!

Helen

Hi
Sounds like she has another login. If memory serves (as I've not set up a new company for payroll for a while, but can have a look when I'm eventually on my PC later) you shouldn't need her login to do the payroll, just the PAYE references in your payroll software. Unless you wish to check coding notices in which case you need hers or your agent login in. What software are you using?
