can anyone recommend a good course to teach payroll and CIS? I intend to use Moneysoft when I am up and running but can't find a course that teaches this software so am looking more for an overview of the process which i can then apply to this software if that makes sense?
The only payroll course that covers payroll & CIS is the ICB Level 3 in Payroll Management ... The exam is split into manual which is about 65% of the marks and computerised ... The computerised part is not product specific and you can use any payroll software you want. Courses are offered by a few providers (but do usually include Sage for the computerised bit). You may be able to purchase the manual course separately and then paddle your own canoe with Moneysoft.
The IAB payroll courses revolve totally around Sage and no CIS - Another alternative is to take the CIPP Payroll Technician exam and then again no CIS.
If you want to open a payroll bureau, then go for the ICB exam as you can get a practice licence and be covered for MLR (also cheap PII insurance).
Moneysoft does not have an AE module (only a report) !!!!!

I will take a look at your suggestions and maybe start out offering payroll services and possibly branch out in to CIS at a later date.
I have just applied for Fellow Membership with IAB so my intention is to get my practice licence and MLR through them. I'm wanting to take some kind of payroll and CIS course as the majority of people I have spoken to to gauge an interest in using my book keeping services would see me being able to handle payroll as a definite bonus. I know enough about payroll to muddle though to a certain extent as I have dealt with payroll as an employee in accounts jobs but for my own peace of mind more than anything else I wanted to get a broader knowledge.

There are a few posts (including a recent one) about Groupon doing some good/cheap courses for payroll. Might generally be starter courses but if you end up doing payroll for small one man bands that would be all you need to get going. You mention about a course that teaches the software - to be honest the help files in Moneysoft and 12 Pay are all you need to learn the software - I even set up a dummy/test company in moneysoft as at the time I couldnt be bothered reading their instructins so learnt most of it be just having a play around. Would suggest when you come to try it for real make sure its a business day (Mon - Fri I mean, as opposed to an Accountants business day which for most is 7 days, lol) - as their help desks are only open Mon- Fri, but they are very good if you need further hand holding. (Always back itup - my mantra!!).
Ive done CIS for almost 3 years - learnt all I know from HMRC/Moneysoft and a bit of help from this forum)
If you are looking to do payroll for more people then I would suggest CIPP - or outsourcing! Dont forget you need to learn all about auto enrolment

Hey Cheshire , regarding CIS on sales . Can you advise what the set off amount is . I.e is it the tax suffered in the month ? Or as the purchase CIS return shows the sub total .
Have submitted the tax suffered but not sure what I can reconcile it against to check its correct etc
Sorry for jumping on the thread guys , just obviously first time I've submitted CiS on sales and concerned it may be incorrect , and with submission deadline being tomorrow I don't want to leave it to late if need correcting

Sorry - only just picked this one up, so hop you got sorted for 19th. But if not - you can always do an adjustment (subject to the usual 'error reporting' to HMRC if required). There are a couple of set - off situations that come to mind with CIS.
1) A company/individual can be both contractor and a sub-contractor. Where sub-contractors are Limiteds they can set off their deductions against certain tax suffered eg PAYE tax due from their own employees and by reducing the amount payable by the amount of CIS deductions made from their income. I tend to keep the amounts of PAYE and CIS tax in separate nominals but just find thats a better way for me when it comes to reconciling, although I dont have any who are both subbies/contractors., so perhaps one account would be better (or just run a spreadsheet). There are circumstances where you can offset against Corporation Tax, I believe, if there isnt enough PAYE, but would need to look into that one further.
2) Set-off is money not paid to a subcontractor by a contractor who believes there has been a breach of contract. Eg contractor reduces amount payable due a dispute means they only have to calculate the CIS due on the reduced amount. (at least until further payments are made!)
